Why do we often face negative emotions? How to minimize/overcome it?
• They are a signal for threats or challenges that need to be dealt with. For example, fear is an alert for possible danger. It is a signal that personal protection is required. Angry feelings signal an annoyance, an insult, or an irritant.
Anger warns that actions need to be taken to stand up for oneself. Negative emotions focus the awareness, they help to focus on a problem and deal with it. But too many negative emotions can create being overwhelmed.
Some examples are anxiety, exhaustion, or worry. When negative emotions are out of balance, problems might seem too big to handle. The greater our negative emotions are, the more negative we start feeling. Focusing on negativity keeps it going.
What are the benefits of positive emotions/Gratitude?
Having gratitude rolls out much of the negative emotions which mainly occur due to undesired results. And since these are rolled out, there is ample space for positive emotions to come flowing in. Hence Gratitude is one of the main roots of positive emotions.
The health benefits are listed below:
• First and foremost they balance out negative ones and simply makes you happier than you were before.
• Positive emotions influence our brains in ways that grow our awareness, attention, and memory.
• They help absorb more information, hold several ideas in mind at once, and understand how different ideas relate to each other.
• Positive emotions are the onset of new opportunities. It enables a better ability to build on skills, which leads to doing better on tasks, tests, and mainly on facing real-life problems which aren't taught in your schools/colleges.
When we can face these challenges well, our anxiety, stress, and 'panic' are reduced.
• People who have an abundance of positive emotions in their everyday lives are more than likely happier, healthier, learn better, and get on well with others.
• Difficult situations are easier to handle when there are more positive emotions than negative ones.
• Positive emotions build resilience which is the emotional resource needed for difficult situations.
• They broaden awareness, helping to see more possibilities for problem-solving.
• People who have three times as many positive emotions as negative emotions feel better and do better than their previous best. This was the result given by a study.
That is because of something called the negativity bias. It is a natural human inclination to pay more attention to negative emotions than to positive ones.
Negative emotions call our attention to problems, issues we might need to deal with quickly. But often we get trapped in it, rather than finding a solution and coming out of it.
Accommodating negative emotions can be a survival mechanism. The negativity bias has a disadvantage, it can create the idea that a day went badly, not well, even if equal amounts of positive emotions are experienced that day. It takes at least three times as many positive emotions to make a day feel like a great one.
